It is a computer that can use over the Internet from any location. The remote computer technology is not new, it has been about for many years; but not many general users use it.
Businesses are likely to use remote computer technology to monitor employees. The manager or owner can check up employee’s computer remotely for reasons such as files sharing, meeting deadlines, following up tasks, etc.

Educational institutes, colleges and universities also use this technology. Teachers can take control of each student computer remotely. Teachers also can show the students how their performance is on a task or project.

For businesspeople that travel a lot, often set their home computer as remote computer, so that they can access to all their files on computer at home from any other computer. And when travelling they do not need to carry a computer with confidential information with them.

Most computers that can access to Internet can be used as a remote computer. And this computer can also access other remote computer over the network.

Remote computer technology is available by the use of the software. Host program and client program need to install on the computers before it can access remotely over the Internet.

There are many options of remote computer software to choose. Microsoft Windows comes with built-in application that allows remote desktop service, for free of charge. Some Mac operating systems also come with built-in application for remote computer. Beside these, there are also many free software on the Internet for you.

A host computer refers to a server, a centralized workstation, or a mainframe that locate within the network for managing tasks or communicating other network computers known as clients.

Host computer often allows client computers to access and run specific software application. This will enable users to do things such as: database administration, editing document, publishing pages, web development, and video processing.

Database or information is often stored on host computer or centralized workstation. And the host computer will feed the important data to several or thousands of client computers. The data can be: customer information, product specification, inventory, multi-media files, etc.

Usually, while host computer is running and administrating the task, it also allows the client computer to enter data and view some specific information. And the performance of client is depended on the stability of the host computer for easily access the information.

For example, in a small publishing company, a host computer can be used to store existing contents, marketing materials, photography and graphics while it is used by writers, designers and editors. Writers draft the contents and store on the server (host computer). Editors retrieve, edit and return the draft if change is needed. After the content is completed, designers will access them from the server for concept and design page, and build the publication. Then they are ready for distribution.

However, in a licensing software environment, the host computer stores data files, network information about each client and assigned which software application to run for its users. This host computer can be called licensing server or key server because it will provide authorized access for predetermined users only.

In conclusion, host computer can use for many purposes in networking environment.

All web site addresses which appear in the address bar start with http:// and it tells that the page is written in HTML (Hyper Text Markup Language). And it will start with ftp:// when that site is for downloading file via FTP (File Transfer Protocol).

Web browser can also use as file manager to look at computer hard drive files. And the address bar will start with C:\ or any drive of choice.

After user types a web site address in the address bar and hits “Enter” button, they will go directly to the page of that website. And they can click on the active link for surfing more.

If user has a typo in entering the website address in the address bar, it may show error page, or show that domain was purchased by other third party.

Now, there is favicon which can appear in address bar, just before the website address. This favicon is an icon or logo icon. If this site was bookmarked, the favicon will appear in bookmark menu, too.

A netmask refers to a code of numbers used for transferring the message correctly between the computers in the same subnet. Netmask works with network router to determine where the data will go when it is received.

Netmask is used to identify which part of IP address represents machine address and which part represents network address.

Netmask is a mask that hides a part of IP address and replaces it with other numbers.
32-bit mask is the commonly used one. This was created with two purposes. First, it is to manage Internet sites and divide an IP address to subnets. Second, it is to indicate the available hosts for network and decide where the data goes where it is received by routers.

The netmask will hide the network part of an IP address; as a result, only the host computer remains visible to network users. The commonly used netmask is 255.255.255.0.

In a network, the router is responsible for generating the netmask. And netmask is generated by netmask calculator. This calculator will calculate the numbers for the netmask.

Netmask has three classes: class A, class B, and class C. Each class has different lengths, and it means to use in different size of networks and computer systems.

There are also online diagnostic tools available on the Internet that are offered by many computer diagnostic companies. Its features include: speed test, ping test, setting test, line quality test, and VoIP bandwidth test.

Every test has its own function. For example, speed test let user knows whether their computer is fast or slow in receiving and transferring data to the Internet. Ping test can help user to determine if their computer is experience low performance or not. Setting test can help user to optimize their network settings for stable connection. Beside these tests, Internet diagnostic tool can also help network administrator to optimize their network security.

Most Internet diagnostic tools come with basic features of tests. However, the complex tool comes with other features in its package.

While a computer user experiences Internet connection problem, they usually call their ISP’s customer service for help. And they will fix the problem, but some problems can be repaired by computer user if they use appropriate software.

Email or e-mail is the short form of electronic mail. Email is a protocol for sending, receiving and storing electronic messages. Email has been widely used and now it becomes the preferred way for communication over the Internet.

There is no certainty when email was invented, but the father of the modern version email is regarded to be American Ray Tomlinson. His idea was to find the name of user and the computer that the user was located. Then the message could send to that user. At that time, the email address is in the form of username@usercomputer.

Now, the email standard becomes username@domainname. And users can send and receive email using SMTP (Simple Message Transfer Protocol). SMTP is the standard protocol for sending and receiving messages over the Internet Protocol. Other protocols such as: POP (Post Office Protocol) and IMAP (Internet Message Access Protocol), let users to retrieve and store messages.

In the past, to use email, we need to have a dedicated program for email, or we call it, email client software. There are many email application available on the Internet, some are free, and some cost money to use it.

After that webmail become popular, because user can use email on the Internet without needing to install any email software. Some email services design the primary interface just for email, and also let user to open email account for free of charge.

An access provider refers to a company that provides Internet access to its subscribers like businesses and private customers. It is also called as IAP (Internet Access Provider). This company provides Internet connections to their customers through the use of modems (dial-up modem, DSL, wireless router, or dedicated high-speed modem).

They will charge monthly fee from customers. And customers will get username and password for Internet access. And the monthly charge is depended on the speed of connection or the volume of usage.
Using this service, customers can surf the Internet, send and receive emails, download or upload data, host a server or website, etc.

However, an access provider also rents or buys bulk Internet connection from an ISP (Internet Service Provider). An ISP refers to a large access provider that sells Internet connection. The access provider just resells the connection to the general public. Access providers and Internet service providers connect to each other through NAPs (Network Access Points).

Each access provider will offer service to their customers at different bandwidth. Bandwidth is the data transfer rate. It refers to the amount of data that can be transferred from one point to another at a measure of time, normally, measured in bytes per second.

For example, an access provider buys 30 Mb (megabytes) of bandwidth from Internet service provider and resells it in different portion size. The smaller bandwidth like 28.8 Kb (kilobytes) is for individual and small businesses that need to send and receive less data per second, using dial-up, DSL, or cable modem. The larger bandwidth, 64 Kb to 128 Kb or more are for medium to large businesses that need to send and receive large volume of data per second, using DSL, leased line, or SHDSL (Single-pair High-speed Digital Subscriber Line).

Some access providers also offer online content to their customers, beside their Internet connection. These access providers can be called, OSP (Online Service Provider). For example, they provide services such as: news, email, entertainment (music, video, and movies), e-shopping, e-banking, e-health, e-financial service and search engine.
