What is a Router?
A router is a device that takes information from broadband signal via the modem, deciphers it, and delivers it to user’s computer. The router also chooses the best route for transferring data packets to user quickly.
There are many types of routers. Two of them are: broadband router and wireless router.
1) Broadband Routers
Broadband router can be used to do several things. It can control two different computers or connect two computers to the Internet. It can also used to make a phone connection.
If user uses VoIP technology, then they will need a broadband router to connect Internet to the phone.
2) Wireless Routers
Wireless router lets user connect the modem and create a wireless signal in user’s home or office. Any computers within wireless range can connect to router and access to the Internet. In order to prevent anyone from connecting to this router, this router needs to be secured.
Beware that not securing the wireless router is susceptible to hackers and identity thieves. To secure router, you need to set long complicated secure key for it.
Make sure, you write down the key or save it in Word or Notepad. When you need to access Internet, you need to enter the key. Your computer can remember the key, but writing it down for safe keeping.
