What is WiFi?
Wi-Fi comes from the word “Wireless Fidelity”. It is a wireless network technology that uses 802.11 standard. It was developed and released in 1997 by IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers). WiFi is alternatively spelled wifi, Wifi, WiFi, Wi-Fi or Wi-fi.
In a wifi network, computer with wifi network card can connect wirelessly to a wireless router. And that wireless router connects to the Internet by modem, cable modem or DSL modem. Within 200 feet of access point, user can connect to the Internet. However, within 100 feet or less, they will get better data transfer rate. On the other hand, there is also “wireless signal booster” that can extend the range of this wireless network.
Wifi network can be open or closed. Open network means anyone can access it without any password. Closed network means they need password to access it. The area that covered by this wireless access is called “wireless hotspot”.
Wifi technology use radio frequency of 2.4GHz for communication. And this technology is designed for lightweight computing system of the future. This means it is mobile and consumed minimal power. Nowadays, laptops, PDAs, phones and many accessories come with Wi-Fi compatible.
And the range of wifi will extend to 300 feet, 600 feet and beyond; while at the same, it also boosts the data transfer rate.
